How Sales Reps Can Use Google Maps to Build Territory Prospect Lists

Territory management is one of the most time-consuming parts of field sales. Knowing which businesses to target, where they are, and how to prioritise your time across a geography is something most sales reps figure out through trial and error. There is a faster way.

Google Maps contains verified, up-to-date data on every business in your territory. If you know how to extract that data efficiently, you can build a complete territory prospect list in under an hour — and do it again every month as new businesses appear.

What Google Maps data tells you about a prospect

Before you make a call or knock on a door, the data from a Google Maps listing tells you quite a lot about a business:

Star rating. A proxy for how well they are doing and how their customers feel about them. High-rated businesses are typically more established and more likely to have budget.

Review count. A rough indicator of volume and how long they have been operating. A business with 100+ reviews is well-established and worth prioritising.

Website. Whether they have invested in digital or not. Businesses with no website are often warm leads for certain types of B2B products and services.

Opening hours. When to call or visit for the best chance of reaching someone.

Address. Exact location for route planning and door-to-door visits.

Phone number. A direct line for cold calling, pulled from the Google Maps listing.

ProspectPin lets you search any business type in any location and export the results as a CSV. For a full walkthrough of how the process works, see our guide on building a lead list from Google Maps.

For a sales rep covering a territory, the typical workflow looks like this:

Search by business type and location. If you sell payment processing to hospitality businesses in Dallas, search for restaurants in Dallas. The more specific your search, the more relevant your list.

Export and segment. Download the CSV and sort by rating and review count. High-rated businesses with lots of reviews are your tier one prospects.

Plan your route. Every result includes a full address. Sort geographically and you have a planned route for door-to-door or area visits.

Track your outreach. ProspectPin's built-in lead status tracking (Pro and Agency plans) lets you mark each prospect as New, Contacted, Responded, Not interested, or Converted. Your territory list becomes a live pipeline rather than a static spreadsheet.

Prioritising your territory

Minimum rating filter. If your product is most valuable to businesses that are performing well, filter for 4+ stars. If you sell reputation management, filter for lower-rated businesses.

Review count. Fewer than 10 reviews suggests a newer business that may not have established purchasing processes yet. More than 100 reviews means a well-established operation worth prioritising.

Use the AI insights feature to get a specific read on each prospect's situation before you call — it tells you the likely pain points and the best way to approach them.

How this compares to other prospecting roles

The same Google Maps prospecting approach is used by recruiters finding employer clients and by B2B sellers across any niche. The underlying process is identical — the target and pitch are different. For US-specific territory building, see our guide on finding local business leads in the US.

Refreshing your territory list

New businesses open every week. Running a fresh ProspectPin search for your territory once a month means you never miss a new business that has opened and is not yet on any other list.
